The Center for Disease Control estimates that 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year in the United States, and it is especially prevalent in the Northeast and Upper Midwest.
Unfortunately, Jay didn’t realize he had contracted Lyme disease right away, and his health gradually began to decline. When he was diagnosed, the Lyme disease didn’t respond quickly to treatment. Jay spent six months in a health clinic and began looking into underlying causes of his condition.
“When they tested me for mycotoxins, I had 20 times the mold toxicity that is considered healthy,” says Jay. “My symptoms were more from mold toxicity than Lyme disease because it was weakening my immune system. I didn’t think this was possible because I lived in a newer home.”
Jay’s body, like many others, has trouble flushing toxins. Mold was weakening his immune system, allowing the Lyme disease to thrive. Limiting his exposure to mold and other toxins is one of the best ways to enhance his overall health.
As a builder, Jay has become very interested in creating homes that promote the health of its occupants. He began retrofitting homes with Zehnder ventilation systems to boost indoor air quality. Ventilation is especially important for tight homes that don’t experience much air leakage between the outdoors and the inside.
“As a builder, and someone who is sensitive to environmental toxins, I’m very careful to make sure my clients are getting quality products that will improve their lives,” says Jay. “If I’m not convinced of a product’s value, then I can’t try to sell or educate my clients on that product. I always compare the initial costs with the potential long-term benefits. With Zehnder ComfoAir systems, it is easy for me to explain to my clients that the potential health benefits of cleaner air and healthier living are well worth the costs and may in the long run help them to live healthier and more productive lives. This has been my experience, and I look forward to working with those who understand healthy living starts at home.”
The Zehnder heat recovery ventilators that Jay installs filter intake air, removing many common contaminants, including mold spores, pollen particles, and dust mites. They simultaneously exhaust equal amounts of stale, polluted air from inside the home.
When Jay bought a 2,000 square foot ranch house a couple of years ago, he didn’t realize there was a mold issue in the basement closet because the mold growth was concealed behind a wall. Unfortunately, Jay’s health slowly declined; his muscles felt weak, his digestion was off, and he was lethargic. He also noticed a smell as soon as he entered his home. Both problems persist until he remedied the mold in the basement and installed a Zehnder ComfoAir 350 heat recovery ventilator in March 2017.
“Now when I walk into my home, I don’t smell anything,” says Jay. “Before, I noticed the smell every time I walked in the house and it always bothered me.” Jay’s health also started improving almost immediately. “Within weeks of installing the Zehnder system, my energy was coming back, and my digestion was improving,” says Jay.
Although some people are more sensitive to mold than others, excessive exposure can often cause respiratory illnesses, asthma, sinus infections, and trigger allergy symptoms. Some of the ways to prevent elevated mold spore counts in a home include eliminating plumbing, foundation, and roof leaks and properly ventilating homes with filtered outside air.
“It's hard for me to believe that mold was causing so many problems for me,” says Jay. “I’ve become very sensitive to it, and I have to live in a clean environment. Everyone does.”
